Dear Site ower.
Thanks once again for a wonderfull site. I just crossed over to your AmericanRomanichals site. Its great to hear of some of the stories of why people left their homeland.I know some of the Smiths went there willingly in the late 1800's. As you say you would like to deal with Australia on this site I Would particulaly like to hear form any one who is related to or knows about the families who WALKED ACROSS AUSTRALIA FROM THE VICTOIRAN GOLD FIELDS TO THE WESTERN AUSTRALIAN GOLDFIELDS. They walked with the Camel (I mean the ones with 4 legs and a hump )trains, along the supply route for the Overland Telegragh line that ran between Ceduna in South Australia to Esperance or just north of there in Western Australia. a journey of around 4 months. They used the camels instead of horses because the horses couldn't survive the lack of water and the feed on the route. Others came here by sea to Perth or Albany. Sadley many do not know their heritage due to early 1900 goverment policies. Some of the names may be Smiths, Ryan, Dickison, Vicent, Riley, Lee(often spelt Leigh here to differenciate from the Chinesse Lee) Woods, Robinson. there are others but I cannot think of them off hand.
My Grandads favourit saying put politely was. "A little Romany knowhow made life in the early days (of Australia) a lot more comfortable"
Cheers Kathi
