  1. Dear Site ower.

Thanks once again for a wonderfull site. I just crossed over to your AmericanRomanichals site. Its great to hear of some of the stories of why people left their homeland.I know some of the Smiths went there willingly in the late 1800's. As you say you would like to deal with Australia on this site I Would particulaly like to hear form any one who is related to or knows about the families who WALKED ACROSS AUSTRALIA FROM THE VICTOIRAN GOLD FIELDS TO THE WESTERN AUSTRALIAN GOLDFIELDS. They walked with the Camel (I mean the ones with 4 legs and a hump )trains, along the supply route for the Overland Telegragh line that ran between Ceduna in South Australia to Esperance or just north of there in Western Australia. a journey of around 4 months. They used the camels instead of horses because the horses couldn't survive the lack of water and the feed on the route. Others came here by sea to Perth or Albany. Sadley many do not know their heritage due to early 1900 goverment policies. Some of the names may be Smiths, Ryan, Dickison, Vicent, Riley, Lee(often spelt Leigh here to differenciate from the Chinesse Lee) Woods, Robinson. there are others but I cannot think of them off hand.

My Grandads favourit saying put politely was. "A little Romany knowhow made life in the early days (of Australia) a lot more comfortable"

    Cheers Kathi

    THANKS JEAN.

Is your Reuben Taylor my Grandad Romans uncle? my Grandad's dad was wallace,?

  3. I was just looking at your Taylor family page, your husbands great grandad Joe looked the same as my grandad Roman, I don't know if may be they'd be cousins or may be he was my grandas uncle, do you know what the link is between them. I don't really know, and niether does my dad. I would like to put together a more complete tree of my grandads people. My Grandads dad was wallace and his dad was benjamin(holiday) I think. I think Holiday would have been born in the mid 1800's but i don't know how to find that out. my grandad died last year and when i asked him this last few year he couldn't remember much about his grandad and his family he could really only remember his uncle willliam(bill). When i look at these web sites I can see connections with my family but I don't know how they are all connected.LOL.

PAT. An ADVANCE AGENT FOR A TRAVELLING FAIR. Was and still is the person who goes ahead of the fair and does the publicity. like arranging for the ground where the fair is to be held and putting up posters etc. They are often 2 weeks ahead of the actual fair itself< but if the fair is staying at one place for a number of weeks will come back and work at the fair.

TERRY. Do you mean 1851 and are you part of the Gray family who walked across Australia from the Victorian to the Western Australian Gold Fields in the late 1800 early 1900's.

  5. To Steven Doe and Vince Smith,

    Re Bartholemew and Woodlock Smith.

Some one sent me a photo headed THE CONVERTED GYPSY BROTHERS of Bartholemew and Woodlock and another man simply labelled as my father. I take it to mean Rodney Smith. It is from a book the only clue I have is the oposit page is page 298 headed GYPSY SMITH It may have come from the book "THE GYPSY PARSON" by the Rev. George Hall printed in 1915, (Though that would not make sence) or a book of similar age. The page states that The gentleman refered to as "my father married a Mrs Sayer and that Woodlock died in the same year and that two years latter Bartholemew died. It also states that when myfather was converted he didn't know A from B and implies that he leared to read reading the New Testament.

As I don't know the author of this book I hope some one can point you in the right direction

  6. Philip Thomas Mead, I have Loveridges from the Oxfordshire area although they're related to my son, and only through marriage. Clementina Loveridge, daughter of Cornelius and born 1838, married Thomas Smith who was one of the famous Smith's from Headington Quarry. Their daughter Clementina was born in Steeple Barton, Oxon. The Gypsies Passing Through site, and Romany Road may have something.

  10. Hi

Found your sight advertised in one of the family history mags and hope that someone out there may be able to help me trace a gipsey ancestor. His name was James Branch and he was born 1851 in Ireland. This was not his original sir name as it was Anglisised when he came to England. He was also known as Matthew. On each census he gives a different place of birth and does not state Ireland on any of them. He seems to have had connections to another family named Branch that were from Fyfield Essex. His children all have the same names and birth dates as the Fyfield James Branch but according to another distant relative I have contacted he was definately from Ireland and had a strong accent. I always knew that there was an Irish connection in the family but nothing more. I am desperate to find out more about him, what was his original name and where was he from? Can nyone help?

  12. Can anybody shed some light on the Ayres family from Poole in Dorset, Head of family was Walter Ayres, wife was

Eliza Ayres and the one who i am interested in is their son Andrew Clement Ayres who was born in Poole but some how

found his way upto Bedfordshire where he met and married my nan, he was injured in WW1 and subsequently died from

    his wounds in 1919.

Does anybody know if he had any siblings, and did the Ayres family travel out of Dorset.

    Phil Mead

  13. Hi

I have been absolutely amazed at the amount of info available on your site, it's great.

But what i want to ask you is this, i have been researching the romany side of my family for a while now, i've known

about it for as long as i can remember as my old mum told us about it at a very early age, and i am proud to the core of

my ancestry let it be known.

My nan god bless her was a Loveridge, born Miranda Loveridge in Cookham, Berkshire on 7th aug 1890, her old mum was

Susan Loveridge who i believe was the daughter of Cornelius Loveridge and Amelia Loveridge nee Duckett from the Oxfordshire

    area.

Cornelius Loveridge born 1828 in Bicester, Oxford

Amelia Duckett born 1830 in Witney Oxford and died in 1896 in Cricklade , Wiltshire.

( Susan Loveridge was born in 1861 in Barford, Oxford.)

    Cornelius's parents were:

Cornelius Loveridge born in 1805 in Bainton, Oxford, died in 1880 in Bicester, Oxford,

Delathy Delaphis Smith born in 1801 in Oxford and died in 1889 in Bicester, Oxford.

The confusing bit which i need some help with is this, at some point my nan went from being Miranda Loveridge and became Minnie Smith,

and on the 1901 census it has her living in Markyate, Herts with her siblings and her parents who are listed as Aaron Smith born abt 1859 in Ely,cambs, and Susan Smith born 1861 in Bedford, ( could this Susan Smith be Susan Loveridge)?

I have a lot of relations living in the Cambridge area one of which i recently aquired two photos of, you may of heard her name mentioned, her name is Tiny Smith and her parents were True Smith and Emmy Smith, ( Emmy is my nans sister).

If the Oxfordshire Loveridge connection is right , do you know of any photos that may exist of them or indeed the Smiths, any help in this matter would be very much appreciated.

    All The Best

    Phil Mead.

  14. Dan Coleman (b.1920s?) Hartlebury Common, Stourport-on-Severn, Worcestershire

I am trying to trace anyone who may be related to Dan Coleman who lived on Hartlebury Common during the 1940s/1950s. He had a brother who may have been named Michael or William, or both! He had a niece named Ruth who was Michael's daughter. I do not believe any of the above are still alive but relatives almost certainly are. A key feature in Dan's life was his links to the Staffordfordshire/Worcestershire canal and in particular his visits to Falling Sands lockhouse near Kidderminster during the 1940s.

If anyone can help regarding Dan please get in touch.

  15. Hello from America:

I have enjoyed reading all the interesting data that has been presented on this site.

I belive I am related to the Windsor Cooper. My Great Great Grandmother Victoria came to America September 27, 1851 on the Josephine, which sailed from Bristol England to New York around the age of 13. She was accompanied by her brothers Richard and Samuel Cooper and their families. Her father Esau (Asolphe) Cooper b around 1800 and mother Martha (Dovey / Sarah) Cooper b around 1800 and a brother Esau, arrived on the Bellona, also from Bristol on September 8, 1851. Her parents took another trip back to England after 1852 and returned to New York on the City of Manchester September 1854. It has been told that Queen Victoria use to visit their camp. On one occasion she was present for the birth of my Great Great Grandmother Victoria and aided in delivering her. That is why she was named after Queen. The name Victoria has been handed down to my Granny and my sister. Victoria married Thomas Williams who was Known as the gypsy Prince of Conneticut because of his wealth. I have so many colorfull news paper articles on his life in America, including his obituary and about his skill with horses. Thomas was born in Devonshire England in 1832. His fathers name was William Williams, who was also know in England for his horse skill, and his mother Rebecca Williams. If anyone has any info on my Great Great Grandparent's fathers and mothers in England please contact me. It would be so appreciated. I have all the info for America but that is as far as I have been able to get.

This site is a God Sent!

    Thank You,

    Susie

Can any one share any info

    Regards Jenny.

  19. Hi, my Grandads name was Gordon jStuart -B 1922 / D 1995, he married my nana Mary Ann Elizabeth Taylor in 1947 in Deptford, SE London .

My Grandads fathers name was William Arthur Stuart, & i found this out when i applied for my grandads marraige certificate.

I cannot trace my grandads birth cert, this is the most important part of info for me at the moment as it would reveal to me who my Grandads mother was.

I believe that before my grandad married in 1947 he used to live on what they now call Thamsmead gypsy site, i think used to be called E rith marshes.

I have tried to search census records for trailors or tents on Erith marshes of gypsy families residing there, but cannot seem to trace him as i do not know the maiden name of grandads mother.

My Grandad had 3 sisters Betty, Eillen & Shirley & 1 brother called George who apparently has been in a home in Brighton for years but is still alive.

I asked my aunt if she could contact one of my grandads sisters to ask for info on here mothers maiden name but they said they do not know her name, they only used to call her mum,......isnt that a madness not knowing your own mothers maiden name But i think they are telling lies , God knows whatever for but there you go!!!!!!

I hope there is someone out there that might know my family, i am at a stand still the mo untill i get the maiden name of my grandas mother,

    Regards & Parrik tute

  20. Dear Site Owner

Hope you can help me out here. My surname of Clynshaw seems untraceable for ancestors. The last known ancestor was Ernest Clynshaw who married my Great - Grandmother Emily Adams. She was a Romany Gypsy and I believe based in the London area, possibly Wansdworth. (Circa 1800's)

When my great grandmother married Ernest Clynshaw, I know they had Gordon, Leslie, Yvonne ,Frederick, Kenny and Dorcas (Dorci) and Virginia (Ginny - who later married Billie Munday). I also think Emily and Ernest set up home in Battersea but not 100% certain. Not sure in which order there children were all born but I know that Frederick would now be approx 89 yrs old. Frederick settled and married Rosetta Ludlow and they were settled in Latchmere, Battersea, London and went on to have 3 children (2 boys and a girl) circa 1940's/50's.

Any help/photos would be really appreciated.

    Many Thanks

  21. Looking to find out about anscestors who I have been told were romany gypsies. My great grandmother was Emily Adams until she married Ernest Clynshaw. 22. Super site!

Looking for any info on my wife's spirit guide. She was Bella Saunders born 1888 in Luton,Beds, the illegitimate daughter of my wife's great grandfather Patrick Callaghan (of no importance here) and Mary Ann Saunders. I assume Mary was married to a Saunders at one time as she had a son,John born 1873 Isle of Bicel. Mary Ann born 1851 in Chichester. They are listed in the 1901 census living in a Vardu at Cann hall,West Ham,Essex and Mary was a travelling show proprietess and a widow.

Bella (possibly Arabella) always appears in spirit form sitting on the steps of their caravan, wearing a many-layered skirt and smoking a long clay pipe. She also had a birthmark on her cheek, and I wonder if the boxer Billy Joe Saunders could be a descendant, as he has the birthmark?

I have had no luck tracing them to any previous census, and haven't got any further than 1901, although I do know that they toured with Wild Bill Hickok when he visited Britain in the 1890's, (I don't know what sort of show though).

Any help would be much appreciated. My wife is a Medium and healer and would love to know more about her ancestor who gave her this gift, albeit indirectly.

  23. Hi Donna,

That would be great to share some info, I have quite a bit already, but have not been able to go any further back than James. How do I go about giving you my e-mail address without displaying it on the message board?

    Thanks

  25. Thanks for replying Rebekah, I have now found some Williams baptised at Headington through the IGI, but I'm not yet sure if they're related. I googled Headington Quarry but couldn't find any websites relating to a gypsy colony, just morris dancers.

  26. Williams family, there was a gypsy colony founded at Headington quarry, Oxford, by my sons ancestor. May be worth checking, theres loads online about them as one was king of the fiddlers.

  27. Williams family from Berkshire / Oxfordshire,

Hi, I have traced my husband's family back to James Williams b1828 (posibly Hurst or Wokingham) and Clentina Black b1830 Common, Berks (also know as Lemontaney/Lemontania. I believe that James' parents were James and Sarah both born 1806 St Giles.

I cannot find any marriage or baptism records for James or Sarah, so am unable to go back any further. Can anyone help with this please?

Also, does anyone know where I can find out where all the gypsy camps were located in and around Berkshire and Oxfordshire, as this could point me in the tight direction of where to look (and it would be very interesting to know anyway)!

    Thank you

p.s. this is a really good site.

  38. 27.06.08.

    Hello everyone,

I originally posted this in the Romany Routes Google discussion group, but it doen't hurt to cast the net as wide as possible, so here goes:

    -----------------------------------------------------

    "Kushti divvus everyone!

I am descended down the male line from Abram (later Abraham) Evans,

who was baptised in Chedworth, GLS in 1833. He had at least one

brother, Joseph and possibly another, William

His parents were William Evans (a travelling basket maker/chair

bottomer) and Sophia (surname unknown). Abram went on to marry Mary

Ann Alford in Shipton-under-Wychwood, OXF on 1st November 1852.

Mary's father is recorded as Ezekiel Alford on the marriage

certificate, but I think he was also known as Hezekiah/Ezekias,

especially as Abram and Mary called one of their sons Hezekiah (born

in Hartley Wintney, HAM). I have tentatively identified his wife as

    Jemima Jeffs.

Abram's job before marriage was the same as his father. After marriage

he adopted his father-in-law's occupation of tinker/tinman.

Abram and Mary (and Hezekiah) eventually adopted a settled existence

in Buckinghamshire, where, among others, their son William (through

whom I descend) was born. He went on to marry Annie Braden (a gorger).

I have reached a brick wall with William and Sophia, but I'm sure

there must be information about them somewhere. I would dearly love to

find a link back to Wales - I'm sure with a name like Evans there

ought to be, but it would be nice to know definitely. All I know at

the moment is that at the time of Abram's birth, they were described

    as being "of Highworth, Wiltshire".

It's always possible that my Evanses and associated families were not

Romani at all, but given their surnames and choice of first names,

their occupations and the fact they moved around a lot, I'd be

    surprised.

Sorry for the mass of information here but I'm trying to cast the net

as wide as I can. If any of these names are familiar to anyone, I

would love to hear from you.

Thanks and good luck to everyone with finding their roots!"

    -------------------------------------------

If anyone has even the faintest scrap of information about any of these families (especially the Evanses) or a suggestion where I could look (either online or offline), I would be extremely grateful.

Thanks and have a good weekend

    Martin

    Re: Dighton Family

    To: Deborah Ritherford

    Hello Deborah

I am related to the Dighton family and they all 'at the moment' they all appear to be related to the Dighton family on the 1851 census Plumstead Common Plumstead Kent - Jas (James ) Dighton and his wife Eliza Lee. You may already know this if not l hope this helps?

The 'Dighton Family' seem to be an 'elusive lot!'

If any one knows which families /or what happen to Jas (James ) Dighton and his wife Eliza Lee daughters of the 1851 census:

Isabella -born ~ 1834 Capel Kent

    Matilda-born ~ 1839 Swancombe Kent

They may hold 'the key' to my missing Dighton relative (twin girls Clara & Isabella born 8/6/1872 Dartford Common Kent) history?

    Cheers Elizabeth

  50. Hello all, I have sent an email to the owner of the site but now will also post the same request here incase someone knows something of my family. I am currently researching a CharlesCooper that I believe might have been a possible gypsy.

He was born around 1773 to a Thomas Cooper and a Margaret.

He and Alice Davis were a couple and gave birth to their first child Sarah Cooper at Cleobury Mortimer, Shropshire, England on the 13th of December 1793, later marrying at London on the 14th of September 1794, at St Marys Whitechapel.

On the 16th March 1796 he was convicted with a John Lee for horse stealing at Leicestershire Quarter and was sentenced to death which was later changed to life transportation.

His trade was horse groom and he was described of dark complexion with dark hair and grey eyes.

His wife and their baby Sarah Cooper went with him aboard the Barwell, his wife Alice Davis later dying in the colony around 1806. He returned to England alone in 1817 aboard the Surrey paying for his passage by looking after horses, Only to die at Bavtavia Indonesia.

I would love to hear from anyone researching the gypsy Cooper family if you thing there might be a connection.:)

  52. Hi i wonder if any one might be able to help me at all.

i am looking for the ancestors and history of my great grandmother.

Her name was Gentina/Gentilar Carter (depending on if you look at her birth or her marriage) She had atleast one brother whose name was Frederick and one possible brother who could be a cousin (we arent sure) whose name was johny.

Gentina was born in 1902 in hailsham and her brother Frederick born 1904 in Tonbridge and im sure her fathers name was Frederick aswell.

From what i understand they were cousins of a family called the Andrews who ran a fair which often went to southborough (tunbridge wells) common. Supposedly my great gran sold sweets for them.

I do not have any other information but would love to know about it.

Sorry if i have wasted any of your time.

    thanks

    Louise

  53. Hi

I wonder if I could please ask people's opinion about the following situation, and whether it sounds like a possible gypsy scenario?

I have great great grandparents named James White and Mary Ann Pennicott both of whom claim to have been born in Portsea, Hampshire: he around 1850 and she around 1859. I've never been able to find a marriage and can't trace a birth for Mary; neither does she seem to appear in the 1861 or 1871 census. There are of course one or two possibilities for James but I can't positively identify a birth or census entries for him. When the family do definitely appear, in 1881, his occupation is given as horse keeper and he later drives a hansom cab.

One of James and Mary's daughters (there were several) later married a Frank Breadstill (1905). His parents married in 1878, but before that there appears to be no mention of the surname Breadstill in records (census, BMD) AT ALL. The father, William, claimed to have been born in Dunstable around 1857; of course, there's no birth registered and he doesn't appear in census returns before 1878.

Am I on the right track, or barking up the wrong tree?

    Chris

    Re: Taylor Family

    Hello Trevor

I am not related to either the Taylor or Hearn(e) families.

But an Alice TAYLOR 'married' Meshack Hearn(e) and they lived around the Notting Hill Potteries site and would travel into Kent for fruit and hop picking (etc)

See the Hearn (e) Family and Virgin Hearn(e) information on this site which has been put together.

Maybe by tracking 'Meshack & Alice (Taylor) Hearn(e) -you maybe able to trace your Taylor ancestor which you are seeking?

Sometime you have to work around 'known family ' who travel and live near/ with the Hearn family to find your answer (as many on this site can confirm).

Alice Taylor who 'married' Meshack Hearn(e) basket maker born in Harding (~ ) Hertfordshire may be a connection to William Taylor?

Try finding out about Alice Taylor??

Just a thought and hope it helps.

  56. Hi,

I am helping my cousin to trace her late father William Taylor's ancestry. She told me that he was from a traveller family but could not give me much more as apparently there had been some dispute and he would not talk about it.

    However, I have made progress.

1901 his father Henry Taylor living in a house in Acton where son William Taylor would be born in 1906.

1891 Henry Taylor living in caravan, father William Taylor shown born about 1840 Bushey Herts at Stephen Yard / Mary Place St Clements Notting Hill next to a Hern family.

1881 In a caravan Thoams Mews Kensington.

1871 William In Kensington / Chelsea in one of four tents alongside two Smith and a Hern family.

    1861 Not found yet

    1851 Not found yet

1841 William 1 year in Bushey, fathers name John and occupation, Shepherd, living in Merry Hill Lane.

Is there anyone who thinks they might be related, know the family and help me with this history.

n.b. My late mother, like me are from Notting Hill, and William Taylor married her sister. When I was young (about 1960) we went Hop Picking in Kent and my mother used to leave me with an old lady who taught me how to make paper flowers. They used to use words which made little sense to me. When I asked my mother she laughed and said she used to live for a while with Gypsies and that was some of their language.

I never understood until now how this had come about, although back in Notting Hill she used to point out Petulengros caravan.

    Regards,

    Trevor

  65. To Stephen Doe,

In my enquiry on this page I mention Guilroy Smith( my ancestor) and a photo taken with Rodney Smith, as well as some dignitaries from the church and another Gypsy man who my Grandad said was his uncle Sampson. Rodney certainly new the king and given that this Sampson was his nephew it could be the connection you are looking for . I don't know if our family descended from Bartholemew or Woodlock Smith. It can't be Cornaelius because they all married out. We do however know that Bartholemew's wife was literate , so maybe that could be a clue.

  66. TAYLOR/ LOCKS !!!!!!!to elizabeth ann taylor!! my line are taylor/locks lets get in touch and see if we have a connection! thanks jean taylor . please email jaide79@hotmail.co.uk

  67. Hi

Have been looking for information about the 'Eggerton' family. My great grandfather, John, was born in 1890. Official records (other than his death record - Walsall 1930's) have remained elusive. He had a son, Jack in 1926, registered in Sedgley, the mother is listed as Annie Thorpe. I have been unable to find marriage records. Annie disappeared and John lived in a boarding house in Walsall, with Jack, making a living as a hawker until his death in the 1930's. I happened upon this website and a lisitng in the mid 1800's for 'Eggerton'. This has opened up a line of thught to my ancestors that I had not thought of! I would be so grateful if anyone has any information that can help to enlighten me further.

    Thank you

    Lisa

  68. Hi All,

  69. From Vince Smith

    Dear site owner,

I'm new to the site but recognised a photo of my great ,great, grandfather, Guilroy Smith on one of the Galeries. Can anyone tell me for certain how Guilroy was connected to Rodney Smith. We have a photo of the two men taken in Stroude. My grandfather Sidnal, always refered to him as his uncle Reuben (not Rodney) and said that he arranged for his brother Luke to be taken from the front line during the 1st world war and in doing so ,almost certainly saved his life.

  70. My maiden name is WELLS. Family tales strongly suggest a gypsy background but when and where? The 1861 census shows my great great grandfather BENJAMIN WELLS aged 51 and his wife Ann, 50, living at Gypse Yard Cottage, in a forest nr. BROADWAY in Somerset. He was a brush dealer. But where was he in 1851 and 1841 censuses? His eldest son John was born around 1841 in YARCOMBE, Devon and his wife, Mary Ann, came from Dorset. Benjamin is shown as born in Hampshire and tentativly in the 1871 census, it says Little Canoord in Hampshire.

Various places mentioned in the census 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, living and children born in, are BRIDFORD, AUGCHURCH, WHITECHURCH,

If anyone has information on BENJAMIN & ANN, or JOHN and where Little Canoord might be, please contact me.

One of my ancestors, it is said was a respected ' medicine woman, livig in Weston super Mare. When she died her caravan was burnt as were her wishes.

  72. hi can anyone tell me about the buckland families who were in north wiltshire early 1900's and after. i would like to find out about ( i think it was william? or alfred ?) buckland, supposed to have been a horsedealer, who would be my greatgrandfather, and emmalina, my great grandmother. from the wootton bassett area, but i believe that there was family in london: and the other family names i am trying to find are pincott ( can show as pinnock, pinfold, pinkott) also north wilts, one registered as a licenced hawker, another as a market gardener, and there seem to have been a large number of them in london. the other family names are brown, bird, curtis, and a possible connection with brewer. any and all help much appreciated. my parents and grandparents are no longer here to ask .

  73. Hi is it possible you can tell me if there are any more childeren register to Louise James and Andrew Cooper. They are my nan and grandad and i can not find my dad registered, but i have managed to find some of my auntie and uncles on this page.

  76. I have some SMITHs in my family and I'm trying to find out more about them, specifically about ROBERT SMITH (b1791) and his wife who is listed as Evening (b. 1801) on the 1841 census & Emily (b. 1795) on the 1871 Census. They were from Leicestershire.

They appear to have had 3 sons -Noah (b. 1827),

    - Thomas (b 1834)

    - Robert (b 1830).

Robert (b1830) married Eliza Ingleton (b1830) from Skillington, Lincolnshire. They had 2 children Robert Smith (b1851) and Lydia (aka Lida) b. 1853.

Lydia married but appears to have retained her mother's maiden name (Inlgeton) for some reason. She married another Smith - Hawthorn/Othorn (b.1843). Hawthorn & Lydia were my Great, Great Grandparents.

Looking at the census information the Smith family appears to have been gypsies and moved around the East Midlands. They worked as Salt Hawkers, Horse Dealers and Chain Makers.

Is anyone able to help please

    Many thanks

  77. Hi,

I don't know if anyone can help but I am looking for information on the family of Terence Idris Lock born 22 April 1933 in Birkenhead. His parents were Idris Lock and Margaret Dixon however I cannot find a marriage between them. It is though that Idris and Margaret would have been born after 1901 so I can't find them on the census but it is known that they were romany gypsies. Does anyone have a link to Idris or know how I could trace him and hopefully find his parents?

    Thanks

    Hello!

thank you for this wonderful site.

I am trying to track down any information on my great-grandmother (i know it may be a stretch!), Sarah Ann Vincent, also known as Sarah Ann Sadler. She was from Southwark/Surrey, and from what I am told lost all ties with her family when she married my great-grandfather, Robert Palmer, also known as Robert Symonds.

Just looking to see if anybody knows of any Vincent's or Sadler's from this area. It would have been around 1900 onwards....

    thanks heaps!!!

  86. Hello!

I have an ancestor who I believe was a Traveller or Gypsy. His name was Essex Mallery. Born Northampton c1775, married Mary Godfrey (possibly also a Gypsy name) in Bedford in 1796 where at least 3 children were baptised, had two further children at Springfield, Essex around 1811 - including my ancestor Frances Mezaler (Mahalia or Mizela?) Mallery and a further child, Sarah, with a different mother (Sarah - surname unknown) was baptised in Chatham in 1813. He died in Chatham Workhouse in 1855. His occupation was a tinker and his son, George, born at Springfield around 1811 was variously a Tinman/Brazier/Smith. His first marriage was to Elizabeth Hilliar (a gypsy name?) but he left her with three children and lived with Sarah Buckle (another Gypsy name?) by who he had a further 7 children. I have never found the baptism of Frances Mezaler Mallery and George Mallery nor Essex Mallery's second marriage - if indeed he did marry again.

If anyone has ever come across any information about this family I would be very pleased to hear from you.

    Best wishes,

    Gerry

    Hello

Hoping anyone would have any information on the 'Amor' Family?

We believe they were a small Gypsy family around the Middlesex / Berkshire area.

My great great grandmother was an Emily Amor born ~ 1835-1838 (ish) in query Harefield or Hatfield MDX according to the 1861 & 1871 census of Kent. Emily Amor 'married' (Gypsy way) to Hezekiah Lee (aka Old Joe Lee).

We know very little about her, as I have not found a baptism as yet -so her parents remain unknown and a mystery to us!

If anyone knows about the Amor family or who Emily Amor's parents were - would love to hear from you!

Thanks for all who have helped me through this site so far - much appreciated!

I was hoping that somebody might be able to shed some light on the rest of my great-grandmother's family as we seem to have ground to a halt. The surname was Tucker and they lived and around Somerset, settling (I believe) in Taunton.

Anything that comes to light would be greatly appreciated - thanks!
