To Linda Ackleton......Hi...

To Linda Ackleton......Hi Linda, many thanks for your response. I did find Britannia married to John Loveridge and living in Reading on the 1901 census with their children - Hilda, Phoebe, Leander, Alexander, and my grandfather Herbert Smith was also there aged 15 (living / visiting? ). Hilda was a witness at Herbert's wedding to Ethel Maude (my grandmother). Didn't know John and Britannia settled in Staines area.

Israel Smith ( Britannia's brother) also married a Loveridge, Charlotte, and I think she was John's sister.

Do you have any photo's of Britannia? I have a picture of her mother Phoebe outside her van with some of her children but have been unable to identify them all....one might be Britannia, I could send it to you if you like.

Still struggling to find out anything about Britannia's father Alexander Smith - would like to know who his parents were?

and also her mother Phoebe - census records say she was born in Reading and I know she settled in a cottage in St. Saviours Rd in Reading after Alexander died but I have no idea what family she was from. Would love to know more. Thanks again, Sue.

Jane Cole and her sons Frank, Goliath, and Jesse sang to George B. Gardiner in 1908. They were then living at Oakley, but were at North Waltham in 1901 (RG13/1111/25/3). If any of your correspondents have information about or anecdotes on the Coles, or - still better - have photographs, I would like to hear from them. This project will lead to a series of presentations in Hampshire and a Hampshire 'folk map' like the one already produced for Somerset. Other gypsy families collected from in Hampshire included Albert Doe of Bartley, the two James Rays (father and son) in the Petersfield area, and Susan Mitchell, also at Petersfield.
